Soil Conservation & Best Management Practices
Soil erosion, nutrient and pesticide transportation are a significant problem in Missouri that produces a great degree of water pollution. Boondocks Organic Ranch and Farm is a small for-profit Farm setup to address the problem. The farm operation uses cover crops to prevent erosion, while providing natural nutrients for the soil that will also support the cash crops. Sustainable methods are employed such as no-till planting and no-till interseeding of cover crop into the cash crops. This practice is less costly, more efficient and improves plant yield of the cash crops, prevents the need for inputs of chemical pesticides and herbicides. Ultimately these practices aid the community by lowering their costs for organic meat, vegetables and produce.
The project is economically viable because it is much cheaper to plant cover crops that will build and conserve the soil. In addition, the operation will use biological pest and weed management to prevent the transportation of pesticides and herbicides into the soil and ground water. The goal is to develop sustainable livestock integrated agricultural practices that can be shared and replicated by other small farms. Using these socially responsible methods will improve the quality of life for my community and natural animals in my area by reducing the release of harmful chemicals into the environment.
